Working for Justice: My personal Hero

It's February! This month we celebrate the birthdays of George Washington, our first President, and Abraham Lincoln, the man who freed the slaves. It is also Black History month, when we pay tribute to the African Americans who have played key roles in our national story; Harriet Tubman, W.E.B. DuBois, Jackie Robinson, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, and so many more.

So, RTC People, take a moment to think about your life here in the US. Who is your personal hero, in regards to justice and equality?  Then leave a comment about who is important to you and why - even if they are not famous.
Note: You sometimes have to click "post comment" several times until it says "Your comment was published."

  1. I really respect Michelle Obama, who is creating a new image of what being a first lady is all about. She is a great no-nonsense mother who takes the responsibilities of parenting seriously without losing the spirit of fun. She inspires me to be graceful under pressure, and to follow my heart. - E.D.F.

  2. My personal hero is my mother. She raised 10 of us kids - including a foster child of another race. She taught us by example about the importance of treating everyone with love and respect. She is a RN by profession and after she raised us kids, she started a county-wide non-profit volunteer hospice that served several hundred families a year at no charge to the patient or their families and receive no government funding - it was all done through donations from the local community. She served as Executive Director of that Hospice for 32 years, working full-time (and more in the early years!) and never accepted a pay check for her work. She has won many local, state and national awards for her work with Hospice. She finally retired at age 84. She is my hero and inspiration and a darn good Pinochle player! I love her to bits! --Debbie

  3. Jesse Owens. It took a lot of self-muster and courage to stand proud in a hostile and negative environment during the 1936 Olympics. Those of you who do not know this man, read about him. It will make you proud! It may even inspire you to be someone you don't think you can be. MDR
